Path of Exile Item Upgrades The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading the performance of them. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes. Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their requirements. Armor Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the stats of the item they're connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components inside them, using an expert or greater salvage kit. The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon can absorb depends on the degree of upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to its highest upgrade level will boost the damage it absorbs. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be heavier. There are a few different types of armor upgrades available in the game, and each one has distinct effects. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade an item can be given, as illustrated below. Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are shown by the “Magic” and “Hybrids” entries in the table below. Weapons Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For example an upgrade can enhance the damage caused by the shells of a shotgun or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain weapons come with special upgrades to improve their inherent characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage). Most upgrades for weapons require three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade. They can be obtained by finishing side quests, killing a certain amount of monsters or bosses, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine. To upgrade an equipment set, weapon piece or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [ArmorBoboko. Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee that is a certain amount of Bars. The more bars needed to complete an upgrade the higher the level. If you have multiple upgrade materials, the cost of upgrading will be lower. In Chapter 2: Season 5, the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets changed a little. All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a sufficient level to obtain these. Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without damaging the original. You are able to replace the jewel once within an item of equipment. Using more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable, and is often used for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than metal so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them. In addition to the above upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Trinkets Trinkets are a great way to give your character a variety of small, but useful, benefits. They can be acquired starting in the areas of starting as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and by completing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post. The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings, in a similar way to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets. These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active whenever the hero is not in combat. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active and may also help make up for a lack of a strong team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics. In general trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace anytime soon. Also, consider items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel for the item that is to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, since it's generally better to upgrade a single important stat than two sub-optimal ones. In the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their trinket into a red one, while top and mid players usually choose the pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have an impact on the hero's ability to manage the map. In addition to the items mentioned above, players can also find a number of other trinkets throughout the game in the form of trophies and awards. They can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, for instance finishing a chapter's main quest or killing a certain boss.
